Data view has a 'selected features' option so you can choose certain features (within a map layer) to display and hide the others.

 New functionality

CUSTOMISE (including lat/long format selection):

Find and select the new customise button at the top of the map page:

Map tool buttons showing location of customise button.

The customise page lets you choose:

1) Your preferred coordinate format.  When you roll your mouse over the map you will see lat/long coordinates displayed in the bottom left side of the internet browser (in the status bar).

A combination of decimal degrees and degrees decimal minutes is displayed:

Example of coordinate display in the status bar.

2) Your preferred units of measure (linear and area) - to be used in size calculations for lines and polygons (as part of import my points) and by the measure distance tool.

Nautical miles measurement displayed:

Measured line on the map displaying distance in nautical miles.

3) Your preferred map appearance options - including style of north arrow.

DATA VIEW'S SELECTED FEATURES:

Let's say you wanted to have the map display only Blue cod quota management area 1 (BCO1).  Here's how to do it quickly and easily...

1) Click the data view link on the legend for a map layer you are interested in, in this case Blue cod quota management areas (QMA's):

legend tile for Blue cod quota management areas map.

2) You will be taken to the data view page. Place a tick in the box to the left of a row to select the feature you want, then click the 'Show Selected Objects' button.  Here we are selecting just BCO1:

Data view page for Blue cod showing one feature being selected for display.

3)  Voila! BCO1 only! The rest of the map layer is hidden.  This can be useful for making your own maps on NABIS when you only want to show certain features.

Web mapping service

The Ministry of Fisheries spatial data infrastructure (SDI) is now making 98 of its data layers available via a web mapping service (WMS).  This is a technical way of saying that these 98 maps can be reused in other systems / websites.  For example - the map showing the Annual distribution of Albacore tuna can now be directly accessed over the internet via the web address -

http://sdi.fish.govt.nz/sdi/mapserver.wms?VERSION=1.3.0&REQUEST=GetMap&LAYERS=Annual%20distribution%20of%20Albacore%20tuna&STYLES=&CRS=EPSG:4326&BBOX=-57.500758, 157.0018,-24.000006, 193&WIDTH=768&HEIGHT=1024&FORMAT=image/png&TRANSPARENT=TRUE&BGCOLOR=0xFFFFFF

The link above (and others like it) can be edited to change the colours and display of the map image.
