Nabis Update: 18 October 2010

Draw Polygon and My Layers Tools added - October 2010

Hi All,

The Draw Polygon and My Layers Tools have been added to NABIS.

Both of these tools are brand new pieces of functionality that we have developed in response to the needs of our users.  The tools are explained in detail below.

You may have also noticed that the link to 'Old' NABIS has been removed from the home page.  With the addition of the Draw Polygon tool, we have finished implementing almost all of the important functionality that old NABIS had so we have decided to turn the old version off.  The old internal (only available for Ministry of Fisheries staff) version of NABIS remains, if you have a need to use this version, please let us know (this too will be turned off in the near future).

Thanks to all of you who have given feedback on the data and operation of the new system.  Please continue to let us know what you think of the new release of NABIS by emailing us at nabis@fish.govt.nz

 Draw Polygon

Draw Polygon is a tool that allows you to draw a polygon and analyse the commercial catch data that has been recorded inside the boundary of the polygon (see the help files for more details).  Only Ministry of Fisheries staff can use the analyse function, but all users of NABIS can draw a polygon on their map.

1) Click the Draw Polygon button in the map toolbar at the top of the map window and use your cursor to click a number of points on the map page to create a shape.

Double click on the last point to complete the polygon.

2) Click into the Map Legend for your polygon.

You can use any of the standard legend tools with your polygon layer, as well as 2 new legend tools named Edit and Analyse (this tool is for Ministry of Fisheries Staff Only).

The Edit tool will allow you to edit the points of your polygon, change the name of your polygon and add labels.

The Analyse tool will allow you to produce a .csv file that will contain the fishing effort that started within your polygon.

Refer to the help files or contact us for more details on each of these new features.

 My Layers

The My Layers tool allows you to save a set of layers so you can load them again quickly.  You can choose to add any standard layer to your My Layers group - this excludes any layers created using the layer generation tools (e.g. Commercial Catch, Commercial Fishing Effort and Import My Points) and the Draw Polygon tool.

1) Open the NABIS map page and add as many standard layers as you like to the map window.

Click Save My Layers in the map tools at the top of the map window.

2) The next time you return to NABIS - click Load My Layers (in the layer generation tools) and the layers that you had previously saved will be loaded in your map window.
