Nabis Update: 09 October 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the new NABIS site!

NABIS has been rebuilt with a new database behind the scenes.  The database uses some Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards.  This means that in the future the wealth of spatial information you see on NABIS can be queried, extracted and re-used by a wide range of users and other Ministry of Fisheries systems. Overall the site still has the same look and feel.  We hope you will find the new site useful and enjoyable to use.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Differences you will notice:

Updates to NABIS data will be quicker.  The team now has access to a new suite of tools to update the site content and data.

New topographic and hydrographic charts that work better with all the other layers on NABIS - these are now in the WGS84 projection, so no need to use them specifically with the Topographic maps home page Topic they can be loaded from any topic.

A new and improved search function.  Try it out. It searches wider finding places and map layers as well as metadata, lineage content and other site content.  Results are presented in a user friendly results page.

Example of Search Results Page.

A new and improved print function that allows you to save high quality, high resolution maps for incorporation into documents.  Choose the 'Print Map' button and choose 'Save as Image' output type and a 300 or 600dpi image size to see the higher quality outputs for yourself.

More print options.

Please contact us @ nabis@fish.govt.nz

  • We can answer your questions and provide help on using the functions on NABIS.
  • Please let us know if you have previously used the Analyse Layers Tool and found it helpful.  As we are still undecided about whether to include it in the new site.  It allows you to choose two species distributions and find where they overlap.
  • Please continue to let us know of improvements (cosmetic or otherwise) and suggestions for new data on the site.
  • Also if you notice any specific dataset/map that is missing please let us know.
  • We apologise that not all the data has not been loaded.  It will be complete in the next month or two, if you are missing anything specific let us know and we can easily prioritse the layer.
